AT A GLANCE

BC MBA Games 2024

In 2023, Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector employed 2.3 million people, creating nearly 1 in 9 jobs and contributing 7% to the country’s GDP(1). Despite this, the industry continues to face challenges and has substantial room for improvement. British Columbia imports 45% of its food supply, and 40% of its landfills consist of organic waste(2).

To illustrate the magnitude of food waste, in 2014, it was estimated to be worth $31 billion in Canada alone(3). If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases(4). There is an urgent need to address climate change through the lens of food systems. In keeping with this, the 2024 BC MBA Games theme is “An Appetite for Sustainability.” It beckons business leaders to critically evaluate the food system at its different stages - production, distribution, consumption, and waste management inspiring them to act as change agents.

A sustainable food system requires addressing the food security framework, rethinking current practices, and adopting innovative, environmentally friendly practices that prioritize the planet's and communities' health. This process involves acknowledging the detrimental effects of unsustainable food systems, committing to ethical business models that redefine organizational performance, and fostering privatesector investments and innovations that build resilient systems for a cleaner industry.

Businesses can create resilient and equitable food systems by integrating sustainable practices and empowering communities, especially in foodinsecure regions.
