THEME FOR THE YEAR
An Appetite for Sustainability
In 2023, Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector employed 2.3 million people, accounting for nearly 1 in 9 jobs and contributing 7% to the GDP. However, challenges persist, such as British Columbia importing 45% of its food and 40% of landfills being organic waste. In 2014, food waste in Canada was valued at $31 billion, with global food waste ranking as the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases. The 2024 BC MBA Games theme, “An Appetite for Sustainability,” urges business leaders to address food systems' sustainability. This involves rethinking production, distribution, consumption, and waste management, promoting ethical business models, and fostering innovations for resilient and equitable food systems.
